Jagiellonian University PhD Researcher Wins Award for Best Polish Dissertation in Artificial Intelligence

Dr. Eng. Łukasz Maziarka from the Machine Learning Research Group (GMUM) at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of Jagiellonian University has been awarded the Polish Artificial Intelligence Association’s prize for the best Polish doctoral dissertation in artificial intelligence. This is yet another distinction for GMUM – in the previous edition of the competition, Dr. Eng. Dawid Rymarczyk was among the finalists. The success highlights the high quality of research conducted by the group and confirms its strong position within the Polish artificial intelligence research community.
AI at JU: Let’s Get to Know Each Other

On 29 June 2026, the first meeting in the “AI at JU” series, titled “Let’s Get to Know Each Other,” took place at Collegium Novum. This event marked the beginning of the inaugural activities and a series of meetings, officially opened by the Director, Prof. Bartosz Zieliński. Among the attendees were, among others, the Rector of Jagiellonian University, Prof. Piotr Jedynak, as well as Vice-Rectors Prof. Wojciech Macyk and Prof. Bartosz Brożek.
June 11 marks International Lynx Day – the Jagiellonian University is actively using AI in research on wildlife.

On the occasion of International Lynx Day, researchers from the Jagiellonian University, in cooperation with the Babia Góra National Park and the Gorce National Park, present solutions based on artificial intelligence that support lynx monitoring. The analysis of camera trap images enables the identification of individual animals and provides better insight into their behavior, population size, and migration routes, contributing to more effective protection of the species in the Polish Carpathians.
